Masai Ujiri Urges African Governments to Invest heavily in Facility Maintenance Cultures

Posted : 29 May 2026

Dallas Mavericks president and alternate governor Masai Ujiri has urged African governments and institutions to establish strict maintenance cultures for public facilities. The Nigerian-born basketball executive made this passionate plea during the official launch of a new community basketball court in Lagos. Ujiri emphasized that the continent can only achieve true sporting success by looking after its available infrastructure properly.

The milestone event marked the unveiling of the 50th basketball court built under the Giants of Africa "Built Within" initiative. The newly upgraded facility was successfully launched at the historic King’s College campus in Lagos. While expressing immense joy at reaching the halfway mark of his 100-court continental target, Ujiri openly expressed deep disappointment regarding the dilapidated state of the surrounding school infrastructure.

The 2019 NBA championship winner stated that the aging buildings require urgent modernization to match the standard of the new court. He stressed that prominent public structures simply need deliberate face-lifts rather than total neglect. Ujiri specifically questioned why the iconic National Stadium in Lagos has been left in a severe state of disrepair for over ten years without hosting any major sporting events.

The highly respected sports executive added that Nigeria must show strong administrative leadership across the continent. He explained that when Nigeria establishes proper infrastructure standards, other African nations will comfortably follow suit. Ujiri concluded by reminding stakeholders that sports remains a massive global business that should be treated with utmost professionalism by political administrators.

Meanwhile, the court launch coincided with a period of competitive disappointment for Nigerian basketball on the continental stage. Domestic champions Maktown Flyers were officially eliminated from the 2026 Basketball Africa League tournament in Rabat, Morocco. The underpowered Nigerian club suffered a heavy 79-62 group-stage defeat against Senegalese powerhouse ASC Ville de Dakar to conclude their debut campaign with a modest one-win record.
