Masai Ujiri has officially transitioned into a team owner by joining the Toronto Tempo as a Principal Owner. The announcement confirms that the former Toronto Raptors president will share ownership responsibilities with tennis legend Serena Williams. Ujiri is widely recognized as the architect of the Raptors' 2019 NBA Championship and is the founder of the Giants of Africa foundation.
The move marks a significant return to the Toronto sports scene for Ujiri, who spent over a decade leading the city's NBA franchise. His new role with the Tempo focuses on building a championship culture for the WNBA’s 14th franchise ahead of its inaugural season. Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures, praised the addition, stating that Ujiri’s vision for equity and excellence aligns perfectly with the team’s core values.
In conjunction with his ownership role, Ujiri has launched "Tempo Rising," a global coaching mentorship program. This initiative is designed to support women-identifying and non-binary coaches at the grassroots level. Participants in the program will receive direct mentorship from Ujiri, General Manager Monica Wright Rogers, and Head Coach Sandy Brondello. The program aims to create a sustainable pipeline for female leaders within the sport of basketball.
Ujiri expressed his excitement about the project, describing the Tempo as a franchise that represents the future of global basketball. He emphasized that the organization is dedicated to elevating women both on the court and within the front office. The ownership group already features a diverse lineup of high-profile figures, including Lilly Singh and Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson.
The Toronto Tempo will play their home games at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, which has a capacity of 8,500 fans. As the first WNBA team based outside the United States, the franchise is expected to have a massive impact on the Canadian sports landscape. Ujiri’s involvement is seen as a major boost for the team’s credibility and community engagement efforts across North America and Africa.
