Lagos, Nigeria – Maktown Basketball Academy and Amazons Basketball Academy have emerged as champions in the male and female categories, respectively, at the inaugural FIBA Africa Zone 3 Academies Tournament, which concluded at the Dolphins Basketball Court, Onipetesi, Ikeja, Lagos.
The boys’ final was a high-octane encounter between Maktown and the Ilupeju Warlords. It was a tightly contested match, with both teams displaying relentless energy, fierce dunks, and sharp shooting. Maktown’s Thomas Agbo led the charge for the Benue-based side, pushing his team forward in crucial moments.
Despite a strong performance from the Warlords, they were unable to maintain momentum in the closing stages, allowing Maktown to seize control and edge out a 74–70 victory to claim the gold medal.
In the girls’ final, Amazons Basketball Academy dominated early but saw Victoria Queens rally in the second and third quarters. However, the Amazons surged back in the final quarter, inspired by standout performer Hembam Vera, who was instrumental in a 23–19 fourth-quarter finish that sealed the win for the Benue-based team.
The tournament, themed “Webber Engineering,” brought together top youth academies from across the FIBA Africa Zone 3 region, highlighting rising talents and fostering grassroots development in the sport.
The event marks a significant milestone in youth basketball development in West Africa, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills on a competitive stage.
