Luka Doncic will make his preseason debut for the Lakers against the Suns, with his minutes carefully managed.
Luka Doncic will make his preseason debut for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday when the team faces the Phoenix Suns on the road, coach JJ Redick confirmed. The 26-year-old star sat out L.A.’s first two preseason games as the Lakers managed his workload following his month-long stint with the Slovenian national team at EuroBasket.
Following the Suns game, the Lakers will conclude their six-game preseason with a matchup in Las Vegas against Doncic’s former team, the Dallas Mavericks, on Wednesday, and a home game against the Sacramento Kings on Friday.
Redick indicated that Doncic would also play in one of these final games, with the Kings matchup likely being the more suitable option, given that the Mavericks game falls on the second night of a back-to-back.
Redick emphasized that Doncic’s minutes would be carefully monitored in collaboration with his athletic trainer, Javy Barrio, as the Lakers err on the side of caution.
In addition to Doncic, Marcus Smart, who missed the first three preseason games due to Achilles tendinopathy, will also make his Lakers debut against the Suns. Austin Reaves is expected to play as well.
With the regular season opener against the Golden State Warriors just over a week away, Redick is still determining the team’s starting lineup.
LeBron James remains sidelined for at least another two to three weeks due to sciatica and will be reevaluated before returning. Redick noted that finding the right balance between shooting, defense, and playmaking will guide his lineup decisions, even in LeBron’s absence.
