Luka Doncic delivered another superstar performance as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 127-113 on Tuesday, scoring 42 points and recording 12 assists. His remarkable play throughout March earned high praise from Lakers coach JJ Redick. “I think Luka has had as good of a month as anybody that I can remember in the modern NBA, at least since I’ve been part of it,” Redick said.
Doncic’s performance marked his third consecutive 40-point game, bringing his March total to 600 points. That achievement places him alongside Michael Jordan in 1987 as one of only two players to reach 600 points in March, and one of just ten players in NBA history to score 600 points in any single month. Despite his individual brilliance, Doncic stressed the importance of team success. “If you don’t win, it doesn’t really mean anything,” he said. “So the run we’ve been on, it means a lot.”
During the game, Doncic also surpassed 15,000 career points, outshining Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell, who finished with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting and six assists. Yet, true to form, Doncic refrained from promoting himself as an MVP candidate. “I never did that in the past,” he said. “I’m not the one voting. … But I think I’ve been playing pretty good. We’ve been winning. So that’s it. That’s all I got to say.”
Tuesday’s victory held additional milestones. LeBron James recorded his 1,229th career win, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most wins in NBA history, counting regular season and playoffs. Meanwhile, Redick celebrated his 100th career coaching win, becoming the first Lakers coach since Phil Jackson to lead the team to 50 wins in consecutive seasons. “Don’t deserve to be mentioned along with Phil or Pat [Riley] or any of those guys,” Redick said. “I’ve got a lot left to accomplish… We are resilient and we’re resolved.”
Doncic’s 600 points in March rank as the third-highest in a single calendar month since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976-77, trailing only Michael Jordan (676 points, March 1987) and James Harden (610 points, January 2019). The Lakers have also clinched a playoff berth with six regular-season games remaining, including two matchups against the Oklahoma City Thunder starting Thursday.
The upcoming games offer a chance for redemption, as the Lakers seek to avenge prior losses to the Thunder, including a 29-point defeat. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder had an outstanding March themselves, going 14-1 with the reigning MVP averaging 30.7 points on 56.8% shooting alongside 6.6 assists. Lakers guard Austin Reaves highlighted the challenge ahead: “Very exciting matchup. Playing at a high level, obviously one of the best teams in the league, if not the best team. We have an opportunity to go into OKC and battle them.”
