Louis Edem Invitational Basketball Championship: Elan Coton Crush Delta Force of Asaba

Posted : 29 January 2025

Elan Coton Basketball Club of the Republic of Benin defeated Delta Force of Asaba 63-59 on Monday to register their first win at the ongoing Louis Edem Invitational Basketball Championship in Lagos.

The competition, held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos State, features 10 men's teams and eight women's teams competing for honors.

Elan Coton clearly dominated the game early on, taking a 15-10 lead at the close of the first quarter.

However, their lead was cut short in the second quarter as Delta Force’s physical style of play enabled them to seize the quarter with an 18-11 scoreline.

Realizing the danger of losing, Elan Coton adjusted their tactics and matched Delta Force’s physical approach.

Elan Coton was more clinical in their offensive play and proved too strong for Delta Force to halt, as they won the third quarter 16-11.

Elan Coton remained resolute in maintaining their lead despite Delta Force’s determination and never-say-die attitude.

The final quarter was keenly contested by both teams and could have gone Delta Force's way, but some unforced errors in their defense allowed Elan Coton to capitalize on the mistakes and secure their first win in the tournament.

Delta Force Head Coach, Kehinde Edogun, said his team faltered in the final minutes of the game, which was crucial to the outcome.

“We lost concentration in the dying moments of the game, and it cost us the victory. We hope to work harder in future games and avoid conceding defeat,” Edogun said.

Similarly, Elan Coton Head Coach, Gilles Kouamo, celebrating his team's victory, said he was excited about their first win in the competition.

“It’s a testament to our hard work and determination to play well and win. We look forward to facing tougher opponents with confidence,” Kouamo said.

The competition, which kicked off on January 26, will conclude on February 2, when the 2025 champion will be crowned.
