Los Angeles Lakers Majority Stake Sold in Record $10 Billion Deal

Posted : 19 June 2025

The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most storied franchises in global sports, are undergoing a historic ownership shift as the Buss family has agreed to sell its majority stake to billionaire Mark Walter. The sale, estimated at $10 billion, would become the most expensive in U.S. sports history, surpassing recent record-breaking deals involving the Boston Celtics and the Washington Commanders. A spokesperson for Walter confirmed that he is acquiring a larger interest in the Lakers, building upon his 20% stake first acquired in 2021.

Mark Walter, the CEO of TWG Global and current controlling owner of Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers, is expanding his sports empire with this landmark agreement. He is also a co-owner of Chelsea FC and has a stake in the upcoming Cadillac Formula 1 team set to debut in 2026. The Lakers' valuation, now reportedly at or above $10 billion, significantly exceeds the previous record sale of the Celtics for $6.1 billion in March 2025.

The Buss family has owned the Lakers since 1979, when Jerry Buss purchased the franchise in a $67.5 million deal that included the LA Kings and the Kia Forum. Under their stewardship, the Lakers captured 11 NBA titles and appeared in 17 Finals. Following Jerry Buss’s death in 2013, ownership passed to his six children through a trust. Jeanie Buss, who has served as governor since then, is expected to retain that role even after the sale.

Lakers legend Magic Johnson praised the deal, calling it a win for fans and the franchise. He noted Walter’s proven leadership with the Dodgers, who won the World Series under his guidance. "She [Jeanie Buss] knows that Mark will do right by the Lakers," Johnson said, expressing confidence in Walter’s ability to maintain the team's winning tradition and deep community impact in Los Angeles. The sale marks the beginning of a new era for the Lakers both on and off the court.
