Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi will play some part in Tuesday’s final warm-up match against Iceland, as the team continues its preparations for the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
Speaking on Monday, Scaloni explained that Messi will be involved but his exact playing time has not yet been decided. The coach stressed that the team will assess his condition during training before making a final call, prioritising caution to avoid any risk of aggravating his injury.
Messi’s involvement has been closely monitored after he joined the national team camp with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. The Argentina captain was an unused substitute in their recent friendly win over Honduras but participated in pre-match warm-ups and has been gradually reintegrating into full training sessions.
The Inter Miami forward sustained discomfort late in his final club match before the MLS break, prompting medical staff to manage his recovery on a day-to-day basis. Scaloni noted that Messi has been making steady progress and has recently begun partial training with the squad.
The Argentina coach also confirmed that several other players, including Nico Paz, Nahuel Molina, and Gonzalo Montiel, are now available for selection after recovering from minor injuries. The trio had previously trained separately but have since rejoined the main group.
Scaloni provided updates on other squad members as well, saying that Julián Álvarez is recovering well from an ankle issue, while Leandro Paredes is expected to return to full training in the coming days.
However, Argentina have been forced into a squad adjustment after defender Leonardo Balerdi was ruled out of the tournament due to a calf injury. The coach said a replacement will be confirmed after assessing the team’s remaining injury situation.
Argentina will begin their World Cup campaign on June 16 against Algeria, followed by group-stage matches against Austria and Jordan as they aim to defend their title.
