The Louis Edem Foundation (LEF) has officially announced the 2026 Women’s West Africa Basketball Championship, scheduled to take place from August 1 to 9 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
The regional tournament will bring together top women’s basketball clubs and emerging talents from across West Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, and other neighbouring countries. Organisers say the event is aimed at promoting women’s basketball while also advancing youth empowerment, education, and leadership development through sport.
According to the foundation, the championship reflects its commitment to creating opportunities for young people amid ongoing social and economic challenges in Africa. LEF President and former Nigerian international, Louis Edem, noted that basketball continues to serve as a strong platform for discipline, talent discovery, and career growth, particularly for young girls.
Earlier this year, the foundation hosted a successful Women’s Under-18 Basketball Camp in Jos, where participants received intensive training, mentorship, and leadership development sessions. At the end of the programme, four outstanding players were awarded academic scholarships as part of LEF’s educational support initiative.
Edem emphasised that combining education with sports remains one of the most effective ways to inspire hope and build sustainable futures for young Nigerians. He added that the foundation will continue to expand its grassroots basketball programmes across the region.
The upcoming championship is expected to attract scouts, corporate sponsors, sports administrators, media representatives, and government officials from across Africa. Beyond the competition, the event is also projected to boost economic activity in Lagos and strengthen regional unity and women’s empowerment.
Organisers have called on corporate organisations, government agencies, and stakeholders to support the initiative as part of broader efforts to grow women’s basketball and develop the next generation of African athletes.
