LeBron James provided an unexpected moment of entertainment during the Philadelphia 76ers' victory over the Chicago Bulls after taking a sip of a fan's red wine during Monday night's NBA game.
The incident occurred in the third quarter when James chased a loose ball and accidentally collided with a spectator holding a cup of red wine. Known for previously revealing that he enjoys drinking a glass of wine daily, the NBA superstar seized the opportunity to sample the fan's drink.
James later explained the amusing moment with a smile, saying he wanted to find out whether the wine was worth the inconvenience of getting it on his arm. He described the taste as satisfactory.
The fan involved was Troy Clemons, a longtime 76ers season-ticket holder who has followed the franchise for years. Clemons revealed that he was not particularly surprised by the encounter and had no complaints about James taking a sip of his drink.
He said he was simply happy to have the basketball superstar playing in front of the Philadelphia crowd and was unconcerned about the wine spilling onto him.
The unusual moment added to an entertaining evening for the 76ers, who secured a convincing 126-107 victory over Chicago. James contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists as Philadelphia improved its record to 7-1.
The 41-year-old also entertained the crowd with his celebrations, dancing after an impressive and-one finish and sharing another light-hearted moment with teammate Tyrese Maxey. His playful exchanges with Maxey highlighted the relaxed atmosphere surrounding the team's performance.
Speaking after the game, James explained that enjoying the smaller moments was important during the demanding NBA season. He acknowledged that basketball involves intense preparation and competition but stressed that players also need opportunities to have fun.
The four-time NBA champion added that Philadelphia supporters had been excellent in their backing of the team, making it important for the players to entertain them while maintaining their commitment and effort on the court.
This is not the first time James has had a playful interaction involving alcohol during a game. In 2017, after missing an and-one opportunity during a playoff matchup, he jokingly reached for a beer bottle held by a vendor before returning it.
Philadelphia will now turn its attention to Wednesday's meeting with the Detroit Pistons, the only team to defeat the 76ers so far this season.
