The 40-year-old forward has yet to take part in training camp or a full practice and missed the Lakers’ first two preseason games while dealing with what head coach JJ Redick initially described as nerve irritation in his glute.
According to ESPN injury analyst Stephania Bell, sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the glutes and legs, becomes irritated, inflamed, or compressed.
The condition can cause sharp or burning pain, numbness, or tingling sensations, and recovery time varies depending on the severity and underlying cause.
When asked for an update before the official diagnosis was released, Redick said James was “on his own timeline.” If the veteran star remains out for the full recovery period, he will likely miss the Lakers’ season opener against the Golden State Warriors on October 21.
James is entering a record-breaking 23rd NBA season, surpassing Vince Carter for the longest career in league history. Since joining the Lakers in 2018, the team has gone 248–171 (.591) with James in the lineup, compared to 56–78 (.418) without him, underscoring his immense impact even as he continues to defy age.
