LeBron James Set to Finish Season with Lakers Amid Trade Speculation

Posted : 04 February 2026

With the NBA trade deadline approaching, speculation has swirled around potential moves involving LeBron James. Reports suggest that several teams, considered possible future destinations for the veteran superstar, are actively engaged in discussions to acquire star-level talent. However, league sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday that James is expected to complete the season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

James’ longtime friend and agent, Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports, made it clear last December on his “Game Over” podcast that the four-time NBA champion had no plans to seek a trade. “No,” Paul said during the December 9 episode. “Where is he going to go?”

At 41 years old, James holds a no-trade clause in his contract, meaning any potential deal would require his approval. Since Paul’s statement, the Lakers have slipped in the Western Conference standings from second to sixth place. Reports from ESPN highlighted some tension between James and Lakers acting governor Jeanie Buss, adding to speculation about the future. Nevertheless, when asked about his plans after those reports surfaced, James simply stated, “I’m good … I’m good.”

While James’ plans beyond this season remain uncertain, he recently indicated he does not know if he will retire this summer. He did acknowledge that the Lakers’ recent game in Cleveland “very well could be” his last in Northeast Ohio.

As trade talks heat up, teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, and Golden State Warriors—each considered potential landing spots for James if he continues playing—have made headlines for their pursuit of marquee players. The Warriors and Knicks reportedly entered discussions with the Milwaukee Bucks regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo, while the Cavaliers agreed to trade for LA Clippers guard James Harden, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Despite the flurry of blockbuster moves and ongoing trade talks, league sources maintain that James will remain with the Lakers for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.
