LeBron James Scores 40 to Lead Lakers Past Trail Blazers, Defies Age Yet Again

Posted : 21 February 2025

The Los Angeles Lakers faced a challenging matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers on the second night of a back-to-back, with Luka Doncic sidelined due to a left calf injury and LeBron James questionable with foot and ankle issues. Despite the tough circumstances, James delivered an extraordinary performance, scoring 40 points to lead the Lakers to a 110-102 victory.

Head coach JJ Redick was in awe of James' continued dominance at 40 years old, emphasizing not just his physical prowess but also his dedication to the game. Redick highlighted that James, despite his wealth and accolades, continues to play at the highest level, setting an example for professionalism in the league.

When asked about his motivation to keep pushing himself, James pointed to his love for the game and his desire to set an example for his son, Lakers rookie Bronny James. He acknowledged that his time in the NBA is limited but remains committed to giving his all while he’s still on the court. James expressed that playing alongside his son is a special experience, one that further fuels his drive to maintain excellence.

His latest 40-point game marked the second time he has reached that milestone since turning 40, making him the only player in league history with multiple 40-point performances at that age. Additionally, his appearance in the game saw him surpass Vince Carter for third place on the NBA's all-time regular-season games played list.

Despite tying his career high with 11 turnovers, James' impact was undeniable, and the Lakers remained undefeated in games where he committed double-digit turnovers. Redick credited the team's intensity and resilience, stating that playing hard is the ultimate "cheat code" in the NBA. James echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that consistent effort can compensate for mistakes and lead to victories.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves, who contributed 32 points and seven assists, praised James' decision to play through his injuries, noting that his presence alone boosts the team's confidence. Reaves concluded by asserting that James has nothing left to prove, suggesting that anyone who believes otherwise is simply a Michael Jordan fan.
