LeBron James began a new chapter in his illustrious NBA career on Thursday night, making his preseason debut for the Philadelphia 76ers in a 114-108 defeat to the Brooklyn Nets. The 41-year-old forward appeared in a different uniform after years of playing for other franchises, marking a significant moment in his 24-year professional career.
Although familiar surroundings and pregame routines remained largely unchanged, James acknowledged that wearing a new jersey felt different. However, he emphasised that the fundamentals of basketball remained the same and welcomed the opportunity to compete alongside teammates he had spent the previous two weeks getting to know during practice.
The game also marked the first preseason appearance for Philadelphia's projected starting group, featuring James, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and rookie guard VJ Edgecombe. The lineup showed early promise, outscoring Brooklyn by two points during its 10 minutes together in the first half.
James wasted little time demonstrating his playmaking ability, delivering a long pass from near the opposite end of the court to find Edgecombe for a layup shortly after the opening tip. The sequence offered an early glimpse of how the veteran could use his vision and experience to create scoring opportunities for his new teammates.
Edgecombe, who finished with 11 points, said playing alongside James required him to take advantage of the attention defenders paid to the veteran. He explained that making timely cuts, running in transition and finding open spaces would be essential to maximising the opportunities created by James' presence.
James finished the contest with 10 points, four rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes, all played before halftime. He made his only field-goal attempt and converted all eight of his free throws, while Philadelphia outscored Brooklyn by 10 points during his time on the floor.
Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse praised James' passing, highlighting his ability to spot teammates making cuts and deliver accurate passes that created straightforward scoring opportunities. Nurse has described James' primary responsibility as an offensive creator rather than simply a traditional point forward.
Jaylen Brown led the 76ers with 18 points, while Maxey added 14 as the new-look lineup offered glimpses of its offensive potential. However, the team still needs time to develop chemistry and establish effective coordination between its star players.
Embiid had a challenging outing in his preseason return, finishing with six points on one-of-five shooting and committing eight turnovers in 24 minutes, according to the supplied match report. Nurse nevertheless welcomed the centre's return to the court after injury problems had disrupted his availability in recent seasons.
Brown also acknowledged that he and Embiid needed to improve their offensive spacing to complement one another more effectively. The pair collided during the first half, with Brown falling while attempting to avoid Embiid. He later indicated that his knee appeared to be fine.
The 76ers have two preseason games remaining, both against the Boston Celtics. Philadelphia is scheduled to travel to Boston on Saturday before hosting the Celtics on October 16.
Nurse indicated that he intended to give his starters another opportunity to play together and potentially extend their minutes into the second half of one of those games. The final preseason fixture was considered the more likely opportunity for the starting group to receive additional court time.
James acknowledged that developing a strong understanding among the players would take time, but viewed the performance against Brooklyn as a useful starting point. With several major pieces coming together in a revamped lineup, Philadelphia will look to build on the encouraging moments from its preseason debut before the regular season begins.
