LeBron James produced his best performance since joining the Philadelphia 76ers, leading the team to a hard-fought 98-93 victory over the New York Knicks in Friday's NBA Cup group-stage encounter.
The 41-year-old delivered when Philadelphia needed him most, scoring crucial points in the closing minutes to secure another victory over the defending NBA champions at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
James finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in 34 minutes. His performance helped the 76ers improve their season record to 5-1 and extended their winning run in close games.
Philadelphia appeared to have control after building an 11-point advantage in the fourth quarter. However, New York fought back, with Jalen Brunson hitting a three-pointer to give the Knicks a 90-89 lead with 1 minute and 32 seconds remaining.
James responded immediately. He backed down OG Anunoby before creating space for a fadeaway jumper that restored Philadelphia's advantage.
He followed that effort with a crucial putback layup with 11.9 seconds remaining, extending the Sixers' lead and effectively ending New York's comeback hopes.
Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse praised James' contribution, describing it as his best performance since arriving at the franchise.
"He's been good, but that was his best game for sure," Nurse said.
76ers guard Tyrese Maxey also highlighted the veteran's influence during important moments. He described James as a calming presence whose experience helps the team manage pressure.
Maxey led Philadelphia's scoring with 27 points, while Anfernee Simons contributed 21 points. Rookie VJ Edgecombe added 13 points and eight rebounds, including an important late three-pointer.
The Knicks also received strong contributions from their leading players. Brunson finished with 24 points and six assists, while Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds.
The result marked Philadelphia's second victory over New York this season. The Sixers had also defeated the Knicks on opening night, giving them an early advantage in their meetings with the reigning NBA champions.
James' performance was particularly significant given his age and the historical milestones he continues to achieve. It was his first 20-point game since beginning his career with Philadelphia.
He has now recorded at least 20 points in 68 games since turning 40. That figure exceeds the combined total of 20-point performances by every other player aged 40 or older in NBA history, who collectively recorded 67 such games.
James also matched Hall of Fame centre Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the fifth-oldest player in NBA history to score 20 points in a game, doing so at 41 years and 304 days.
Despite the achievement, the veteran admitted he never expected to sustain his career at such a high level for 24 seasons.
"I'm definitely not going to lie to you and say that I knew it would be 24 years, that's for damn sure," James said.
His performance came with Philadelphia playing without Jaylen Brown, who missed the contest because of left knee soreness.
James acknowledged enjoying his new environment in Philadelphia and praised his team-mates for making the transition enjoyable.
"I'm having a great time," he said.
The 76ers will now turn their attention to Saturday's meeting with the Charlotte Hornets as they look to maintain their strong start to the 2026-27 campaign.
