LeBron James gave Philadelphia 76ers supporters an exciting glimpse of what they can expect this season, delivering a spectacular dunk during his first preseason appearance in front of the team's home crowd on Friday night.
The 41-year-old superstar connected with Tyrese Maxey on a long-range pass before finishing with a two-handed slam that sent the sold-out crowd of 19,746 fans into celebration. The moment highlighted the developing chemistry between James and Maxey, whose relationship reportedly played a role in convincing the veteran forward to join Philadelphia this summer.
James received a thunderous reception during the pregame introductions, performing his trademark chalk toss before stepping onto the court in his new No. 23 jersey. Having joined the 76ers for his record-breaking 24th NBA season, he attracted considerable attention from supporters eager to see him represent their team for the first time at home.
Although Philadelphia ultimately lost 125-120 to the Boston Celtics after overtime, James delivered a useful all-round performance. He finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while his combination with Maxey offered encouraging signs of how the pair could work together offensively.
James said their connection could become an important part of the team's attacking approach, particularly when pushing the ball up the court quickly. The veteran's ability to handle possession and create opportunities could also allow Maxey to move more freely without the ball.
The game attracted plenty of attention beyond James's debut. Jaylen Brown, who joined Philadelphia in the offseason after spending 10 years with Boston, scored 20 points against his former team. Joel Embiid also featured as the 76ers continued preparing their new-look lineup for the regular season.
James had previously made his preseason debut against the Brooklyn Nets, recording 10 points, five assists and four rebounds in the first half. His appearance in Philadelphia gave supporters another opportunity to assess how he is adapting after spending the previous eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The four-time NBA champion acknowledged that the team still needed time to establish its rhythm and resolve some early-season issues. However, he expressed optimism about the progress made during training and the foundations the squad had already established.
Philadelphia will begin its regular-season campaign against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday before hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers for its home opener on Thursday.
