LeBron James Commits to 23rd NBA Season with Lakers After Exercising $53M Option

Posted : 30 June 2025

LeBron James is set to continue his remarkable NBA journey by returning for a historic 23rd season. The 40-year-old basketball icon has chosen to exercise a $53 million player option to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025–26 season, according to his agent, Rich Paul.

James, who holds the title of the NBA's all-time leading scorer, is still driven by championship ambitions. Paul stated that while LeBron is aware of the Lakers’ longer-term rebuilding efforts, he remains committed to competing for a title now. “He understands the balance between future planning and present competitiveness,” Paul told ESPN. “LeBron wants to make every remaining season meaningful, and the Lakers are on board with that.”

This move will see James surpass Vince Carter to set a new record for most seasons played in NBA history. He currently has 1,562 regular-season games under his belt, just 50 shy of surpassing Robert Parish’s all-time appearances record. In 2023, James cemented his legacy further by overtaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's career points total, becoming the league’s top scorer with 42,184 points to date.

James began his career in 2003 as the number one overall draft pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He later won two championships with the Miami Heat before returning to lead the Cavaliers to their first-ever NBA title in 2016. Since joining the Lakers in 2018, he added a fourth championship in 2020 and was named NBA Finals MVP for the fourth time.

Adding another milestone to his storied career, James made history with his 20-year-old son, Bronny, who was drafted by the Lakers in 2024. The duo became the first father-son pair to play together in an NBA game in October, further deepening the James family legacy in professional basketball.
