LeBron James and Hachimura Shine as Lakers Eliminate Rockets to Secure Second Round Berth

Posted : 02 May 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially advanced to the Western Conference semifinals following a dominant 98-78 victory over the Houston Rockets on Friday night. Playing at the Toyota Center, the Lakers stifled the Rockets' offense to clinch the series 4-2. This victory marks the first time the franchise has moved past the opening round since their 2023 postseason run.

LeBron James spearheaded the charge with a game-high 28 points, adding seven rebounds and eight assists to his tally. Despite a challenging shooting night, James consistently forced the issue in the paint and drew crucial fouls. Rui Hachimura provided the necessary offensive spark alongside him, contributing 21 points. Hachimura was particularly lethal from distance, converting five of his seven attempts from beyond the arc.

The Lakers seized control early in the contest with a devastating 27-3 scoring run during the first half. This surge allowed them to enter the halftime break with a commanding 18-point lead. Houston attempted a spirited comeback in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 16 points. However, Los Angeles responded with a 10-3 burst to start the final period, effectively ending any hopes of a Rockets turnaround.

Defensive pressure was the cornerstone of the Lakers' strategy throughout the evening. They held Houston to a season-low point total, neutralizing key threats like Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. Thompson finished with 18 points, while Sengun recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Rockets struggled significantly without Kevin Durant, who missed nearly the entire series due to recurring leg injuries.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised his team’s resilience after the game. He noted that the group had been dismissed by many critics just weeks prior. Redick highlighted James' ability to set a physical and mental tone that the rest of the roster followed. The Lakers also saw solid contributions from Austin Reaves, who added 15 points, and Deandre Ayton, who secured 16 rebounds.

With this series concluded, the fourth-seeded Lakers now prepare for a daunting matchup against the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder are the defending NBA champions and finished the regular season with a league-best record. Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals is scheduled for Tuesday in Oklahoma City.
