Lakers Set for Record $12.5 Billion Sale to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger

Posted : 13 August 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers are set for another change in ownership after Josh Kushner and Bob Iger agreed to acquire the franchise from Mark Walter in a deal valuing the NBA team at a record $12.5 billion. The proposed transaction would establish the highest valuation ever recorded for a professional sports franchise.

Kushner and Iger had initially been involved in efforts to secure an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas. However, they shifted their attention to the Lakers after learning that Walter could be open to selling his controlling interest, with the agreement reportedly coming together remarkably quickly.

Walter only took control of the Lakers less than a year ago after acquiring a controlling stake from the Buss family at a then-record valuation of approximately $10 billion. If approved, the latest agreement would give the franchise another record-breaking price tag while ending Walter's brief period as its majority owner.

The proposed sale still requires approval from the NBA's board of governors, with the process expected to take several weeks. Kushner and Iger have said they intend to build on the franchise's legacy while maintaining a strong commitment to competing at the highest level.

Lakers star Luka Dončić has also welcomed the impending ownership change, expressing excitement about meeting the new prospective owners and working toward bringing another championship to Los Angeles.

Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital, already has experience in NBA ownership through a minority investment in the Miami Heat, while Iger previously served as Disney's chief executive and is a controlling owner of NWSL club Angel City FC. The pair's acquisition would give them control of one of the most valuable and recognisable teams in global sport.
