Lakers Guard Austin Reaves Out Four Weeks with Calf Strain

Posted : 27 December 2025

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves underwent an MRI on Friday that revealed a grade 2 strain in his left gastrocnemius, the team confirmed. The 27-year-old will be sidelined for approximately four weeks, after which he will be re-evaluated.

A gastrocnemius strain, commonly known as a pulled calf muscle, occurs when the fibers in the main calf muscle tear, often during basketball activities such as running, jumping, or sudden changes in direction.

Reaves had recently missed three games due to a separate mild calf strain in the same leg, sources reported. He returned to action Tuesday, scoring 17 points in 22 minutes off the bench against the Phoenix Suns.

Reaves started on Christmas Day against the Houston Rockets but remained under a minutes restriction. In the first half of the 119-96 loss, he contributed 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting in 15 minutes before Marcus Smart took over in the third quarter.

The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate for Reaves, who is enjoying a career season, averaging career highs in points (26.6), assists (6.3), and rebounds (5.2), and emerging as a potential All-Star candidate.

It is also a setback for the Lakers, who have lost three consecutive games and six of their last ten, prompting coach JJ Redick to criticize the team’s effort after the loss to Houston.

Currently 19-10, the Lakers hold the No. 4 spot in the Western Conference. Reaves’ absence comes during a critical stretch in which the team faces 15 games, including matchups against top contenders such as the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, and Denver Nuggets, through January 26.
