Knicks Handed Injury Boost Ahead of Game 5 as Spurs Center Luke Kornet Battles Illness

The New York Knicks received a significant structural boost ahead of Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The San Antonio Spurs listed reserve center Luke Kornet as questionable due to an illness. This development comes less than 48 hours after New York completed a historic comeback at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks erased a massive 29-point deficit to edge out the Spurs 107-106. That thrilling victory gave New York a commanding 3-1 lead in the championship series.

Kornet's uncertain status threatens to place a heavier physical burden on superstar Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs are currently attempting to avoid elimination at home. San Antonio already leaned heavily on their young center during the Game 4 collapse. Wembanyama logged 44 grueling minutes on the court. He finished the game with 24 points and 13 rebounds. However, his scoring efficiency plummeted drastically as the high-stakes match wore on.

The French star managed only eight points after halftime while shooting 3-of-14 from the floor. He also missed two crucial free throws late in the fourth quarter. Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged that team urgency influenced the heavy workload. Johnson stated that they kept him on the floor longer to try and win. Instead, San Antonio watched their comfortable lead disappear entirely.

San Antonio's frontcourt depth now appears extremely limited for the upcoming matchup. Kornet played only four minutes in Game 4 and failed to score. He logged just 58 seconds of playing time in the second half. It marked his lowest minute total of the entire postseason run. If Kornet cannot play, the Spurs will struggle heavily to contain New York inside the paint.

The Knicks enter Game 5 carrying immense historical momentum. OG Anunoby sealed the Game 4 win with a dramatic tip-in with 1.2 seconds left. The basket moved New York within one victory of their first championship since 1973. Meanwhile, Wembanyama insists that his team will grow stronger through this adversity.
