King Amakree Academy, Obuama, Rivers State, and Government Secondary School, Gboko, Benue State, emerged champions of the boys' and girls' categories, respectively, at the 26th Nestlé Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship.
King Amakree Academy produced a stunning late comeback to edge Father O'Connel Science College, Minna, 56-54 in a pulsating boys' final at the Indoor Sports Hall.
The Rivers-based school took the opening quarter 15-14 before defending champions Father O'Connel responded strongly, dominating the second and third quarters to build a commanding 47-39 lead heading into the final period.
With their title hopes fading, King Amakree Academy raised the intensity in the closing minutes through relentless defence and improved ball movement. The Rivers side drew level at 54-54 with just two seconds left after sustained pressure forced mistakes from their opponents.
A foul in the closing seconds handed King Amakree two crucial free throws, both of which were converted to complete a dramatic 56-54 victory and spark jubilant celebrations among players and supporters.
In the girls' final, Government Secondary School, Gboko, delivered a commanding performance to defeat seven-time champions St. Judes Girls Secondary School, Amarata, Bayelsa, 68-36.
The Benue side controlled the contest from the opening whistle, displaying impressive teamwork, discipline, and attacking efficiency to claim the national title in emphatic fashion.
Davidhall International College, Ikoyi, Lagos, secured third place in the boys' competition after defeating Urhobo College, Effurun, Delta State, 51-43, while Ado Grammar School, Ekiti State, claimed third place in the girls' event with a 40-30 victory over Urhobo College.
For their triumph, both champions received ₦3 million, basketballs, and other sporting equipment. The runners-up earned ₦2 million alongside sports gear and Nestlé Milo gift items, while the third-place finishers took home ₦1.5 million, sporting equipment, and Milo products.
President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation, Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, described the championship as an important platform for nurturing young talent while promoting education.
She said the tournament continues to encourage students to excel academically and athletically, adding that former Nigeria international Olumide Oyedeji inspired participants with his message on balancing education and sports.
Joseph also noted that cultural exhibitions held during the championship helped educate participants about Nigeria's rich heritage while fostering friendship among students from different parts of the country.
She commended Nestlé Milo for its continued investment in grassroots sports development, expressing optimism that the competition would continue to produce future basketball stars.
The championship once again highlighted the depth of basketball talent across Nigeria's secondary schools, with exciting performances and strong support reinforcing its role in developing the country's next generation of players.
