The road to the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) title has reached its final stretch following the conclusion of the conference group stages. After 30 intense games played across Pretoria and Rabat, eight teams have emerged as title contenders. These finalists will converge at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, for the knockout phase scheduled from May 22 to May 31. The tournament organizers have now confirmed the seedings and quarterfinal pairings based on conference performance.
Petro de Luanda secured the top seed in the playoff rankings. Despite finishing with the same 4-1 record as three other teams, the Angolan giants boasted a superior point differential of +106. Egypt’s Al Ahly claimed the second spot with a +38 differential. The RSSB Tigers and Club Africain rounded out the top four seeds. These rankings were determined strictly by scoring margins after head-to-head results among teams with identical records across different conferences were set aside.
Middle-tier seeding saw Al Ahly Ly take the fifth spot thanks to a strong +64 point differential. ASC Ville de Dakar secured the sixth seed after winning their head-to-head battle against FUS Rabat in the Sahara Conference. FUS Rabat settles into the seventh position despite having a higher overall point differential. Dar City claimed the final playoff spot as the eighth seed. The Tanzanian side advanced after defeating Nairobi City Thunder 90-85 in their decisive group encounter.
The quarterfinal bracket follows a traditional high-low seeding format. Top-seeded Petro de Luanda will face Dar City, while Al Ahly is set to play FUS Rabat. The third-seeded RSSB Tigers will take on ASC Ville de Dakar. The most competitive pairing on paper features Club Africain against Al Ahly Ly. Unlike previous single-elimination rounds, the quarterfinals will now feature a two-game series format. The team with the highest aggregate score over two legs will advance to the semifinals.
Kigali has hosted the BAL finals for five consecutive seasons, establishing itself as the hub for African basketball. The elimination of Maktown Flyers and Nairobi City Thunder highlights the increasing competitive parity in the league. Fans expect a high-scoring knockout stage given the offensive records set during the Sahara Conference. The winner of the Kigali finals will be crowned the sixth champion in BAL history on May 31.
