President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engr. Ahmad Musa Kida, has expressed confidence in the ability of D’Tigers to secure a place at the next FIBA Basketball World Cup, urging Nigerians to throw their weight behind the team as the qualifying campaign gets underway.
Nigeria will compete in a difficult Group E of the FIBA Africa Basketball World Cup Qualifiers alongside Cameroon, South Sudan, Cabo Verde, Tunisia, and Guinea.
D’Tigers will open their campaign against Cameroon on Aug. 27 before taking on South Sudan on Aug. 28 and concluding the first qualifying window against Cabo Verde on Aug. 30.
Kida said the support of basketball enthusiasts, corporate organisations, and other well-meaning Nigerians would be crucial in inspiring the players and technical crew throughout the qualification process.
According to him, the encouragement of Nigerians will provide the motivation needed for the team to compete successfully against some of the continent's strongest basketball nations.
The NBBF president noted that D’Tigers have recorded encouraging results against some of their opponents, having won three of their previous four meetings with Cameroon and both earlier encounters with South Sudan.
He, however, acknowledged that Cabo Verde remains a formidable opponent, with Nigeria managing just one victory in six previous meetings between the two sides.
Kida said he was confident the national team possessed the quality to compete favourably in the group while calling for sustained unity and support from Nigerians as the qualification race progresses.
With World Cup qualification places up for grabs, D’Tigers will be aiming to begin the campaign on a strong footing and improve their chances of securing a ticket to the global basketball showpiece.
The team will be hoping to build momentum from the opening qualifying window as it pursues another appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
