Kevin Durant Targets 2028 Olympics Return as Suns Suffer Injury Setbacks

Posted : 23 February 2026

Kevin Durant has revealed his intention to represent Team USA at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, dismissing suggestions that the Paris Games marked his international farewell. The four-time Olympic gold medalist and Team USA’s all-time leading scorer in Olympic competition told ESPN that he fully intends to compete again, provided he remains effective and deserving of selection.

By 2028, Durant will be nearing 40, but he emphasized that his place on the roster must be earned through performance, not reputation. He has already communicated his ambition to managing director Grant Hill, making it clear that he wants to contribute meaningfully rather than rely on seniority.

There had been widespread belief that the Paris Olympics would serve as a final appearance for Durant alongside LeBron James and Stephen Curry. However, Durant rejected that narrative, stating that he never publicly declared Paris as his last tournament.

While Curry’s participation in 2028 appears uncertain and James has confirmed he will not return, Durant insists he is motivated to remain at the highest level and prove he can still help the national team succeed.

Durant also addressed discussions about the global balance of power in basketball. With international stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander claiming recent NBA MVP honors, questions have arisen about the United States’ dominance. Durant, however, pushed back against the notion that the U.S. is slipping, even after closely contested international competitions in recent years, including the 2024 Games in Paris.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns are facing significant injury concerns. Guard Dillon Brooks is expected to miss four to six weeks after sustaining a broken left hand during Saturday’s win over the Orlando Magic. The setback follows news that All-Star Devin Booker will be sidelined for at least a week due to a right hip strain. Grayson Allen and Jordan Goodwin have also been unavailable because of injury issues.

Despite the mounting absences, Suns head coach Jordan Ott insists the team’s identity will remain unchanged. Phoenix, currently 33-25 and firmly in playoff contention, will look to maintain its style of play while seeking improvement on both ends of the floor.

Brooks has been instrumental this season, averaging 20.9 points and 3.7 rebounds, marking one of the most significant scoring increases in the league compared to last year. His absence presents a challenge as the Suns aim to sustain momentum in a competitive Western Conference race.
