Kawhi Leonard Trade to Raptors Official After NBA Investigation

The long-delayed trade sending Kawhi Leonard from the LA Clippers to the Toronto Raptors has officially been completed following the NBA’s investigation into the Clippers over alleged salary cap circumvention.

Los Angeles and Toronto originally agreed to the deal on June 30, but the transaction was put on hold while the league examined allegations surrounding the Clippers’ signing of Leonard as a free agent.

The two teams agreed to proceed with the original terms again on Monday before formally reporting the transaction to the NBA. Leonard also waived a $7.45 million trade kicker to make the move possible, with the bonus otherwise pushing Toronto above the league’s first apron.

Following the trade, the Raptors are projected to sit $2.3 million below the first apron with 13 guaranteed contracts, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Toronto will receive Leonard, while the Clippers acquire Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, along with two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and two second-round selections.

The trade was finalized after the Clippers spent nearly two weeks dealing with the NBA’s disciplinary measures and completing the necessary internal arrangements.

The league announced significant penalties against the Clippers earlier this month, including the loss of five future first-round picks, a $30 million fine and a one-year suspension for team owner Steve Ballmer. The sanctions followed an investigation that lasted almost a year and concluded that the organization had engaged in a pattern of misconduct and multiple major violations of salary cap rules.

Leonard previously enjoyed championship success in Toronto, leading the Raptors to their first NBA title in 2019. He departed the franchise the following offseason to join the Clippers.

The trade will add an intriguing chapter to the relationship between Leonard and Toronto. The Raptors are scheduled to visit the Clippers on November 2, while Los Angeles will travel to Toronto on January 1. The teams will also meet in Vancouver during the preseason on October 10.
