Kawhi Leonard Trade to Raptors Delayed by NBA Investigation

Posted : 10 July 2026

The blockbuster trade that would send Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers back to the Toronto Raptors has been put on hold while the NBA completes its investigation into allegations that the Clippers violated salary cap rules. Both franchises confirmed the deal cannot be finalized until the league reaches a conclusion on the ongoing probe.

The agreement, reached on June 30, would see Toronto acquire the seven-time All-Star in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, multiple first-round draft assets, a future pick swap and two second-round selections. However, the Clippers stated that the transaction can only proceed if the Raptors agree to accept any potential consequences tied to Leonard's contract that could arise from the investigation. Toronto has declined to assume that risk and instead will wait for the league's findings before completing the trade, while reiterating its desire to bring Leonard back to the franchise.

The NBA's inquiry centers on whether the Clippers improperly circumvented the salary cap through Leonard's reported endorsement agreement with the now-bankrupt financial technology company Aspiration, which also had a long-term sponsorship deal with the franchise. Team owner Steve Ballmer has denied any knowledge of Leonard's arrangement, while the Clippers maintain they did not channel money to the star forward and insist they were victims of fraud involving Aspiration's former leadership.

League investigators have interviewed Leonard and his longtime adviser Dennis Robertson as part of the review, which is being handled by outside legal counsel. Although there is no official completion date, the NBA has indicated it expects the investigation to conclude within the coming weeks.

Leonard, who recently turned 35, is coming off one of the finest offensive seasons of his career after averaging 27.9 points in 65 games for the Clippers. A two-time NBA champion and two-time Finals MVP, he famously led Toronto to its first NBA title in 2019, making his proposed return one of the biggest stories of the offseason.
