Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress will return home with silver medals and a place at the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup after falling 77–68 to defending champions Mali in the final of the U18 Afrobasket Championship.
The Nigerian youngsters put up a strong fight in the championship decider, refusing to allow Mali an easy route to victory. However, the defending champions displayed greater composure in the decisive moments to seal another continental triumph.
The victory extended Mali’s remarkable record in the competition, giving them their 10th U18 Afrobasket title and a third successive championship.
Although Nigeria missed the opportunity to dethrone the reigning champions, their run to the final earned the Junior D’Tigress one of Africa’s two qualification tickets for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China.
Mali, as continental champions, claimed the other ticket and will also represent Africa at the global youth championship.
For the Junior D’Tigress, the defeat provides valuable experience ahead of the next phase of their development, with the team now expected to build on its impressive campaign and continue its quest to end Mali’s grip on the continental title.
