Nigeria’s U-19 women’s national basketball team, the Junior D’Tigress, have officially commenced preparations for their much-anticipated appearance at the 2025 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, scheduled to take place in Brno, Czechia, from July 12 to 20.
This marks a landmark achievement for the team, who qualified for the global tournament after finishing second at the 2024 FIBA U-18 Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Pretoria, South Africa. The qualification secured Nigeria one of Africa’s two slots and marked their first entry into the global youth competition since their initial qualification in 2010.
Drawn into Group B, the Junior D’Tigress will face a formidable lineup, including former medalists China and Canada, as well as Portugal. Nigeria will begin their campaign against China on July 12, followed by matchups with Canada and Portugal on July 13 and 15, respectively.
Led by coach Juliana Negedu, the team has kicked off a focused training camp designed to enhance fitness levels, tactical discipline, and team chemistry. Basketball stakeholders, including coach Ochuko Owolabi, have stressed the importance of an early and well-structured build-up, noting that thorough preparation is key to performing against the world’s best.
Players such as Marvis Hembam, who shone during the AfroBasket qualifiers, have expressed enthusiasm and belief in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level. “This is a dream come true for us. Now we’re working hard to make the country proud,” she said.
The Junior D’Tigress’ participation in the World Cup is a significant boost for Nigeria’s women’s basketball development and offers a platform for young talent to gain international exposure while contributing to the long-term growth of the sport.
