Junior D'Tigress Face Ivory Coast in U18 AfroBasket Semi-Final

Nigeria's Junior D'Tigress will face hosts Côte d'Ivoire in the semi-final of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women's AfroBasket on Friday in Abidjan. The Nigerian team booked its place in the last four after an impressive campaign at the continental championship.

The semi-final carries major importance for both teams. A victory would send Nigeria into the final and secure one of Africa's two qualification places for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup.

Nigeria will also be aiming to reach the final for the second consecutive edition. The Junior D'Tigress finished runners-up at the 2024 tournament in Pretoria, where they lost the final to Mali.

The Nigerian side entered this year's tournament as one of the automatically qualified teams. Nigeria earned its place after reaching the semi-finals of the previous edition, while Côte d'Ivoire qualified automatically as hosts.

The tournament in Abidjan features 12 national teams and runs from August 5 to 16. The competition has also doubled as Africa's qualification pathway for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup, with the top two teams earning places at next year's global event.

Playing the hosts adds another challenge for Nigeria. Côte d'Ivoire will have home support behind them, while the Junior D'Tigress must maintain their composure in a game where one poor spell could determine who reaches the final.

Nigeria's experience in the competition gives the team confidence. The country has remained one of the continent's strongest forces in women's youth basketball and has regularly competed for medals at the U18 level.

The semi-final will also test Nigeria's defensive discipline and offensive execution. Against the hosts, the Junior D'Tigress will need to control the tempo, protect possession and make the most of their scoring opportunities.

The other semi-final will determine the second finalist and the other African qualifier for the 2027 U19 Women's World Cup. The two semi-final winners will meet in the championship game, while the defeated teams will contest the bronze-medal match.

For the Junior D'Tigress, Friday's contest offers two major rewards. A win would keep their title hopes alive and guarantee Nigeria another appearance at the global U19 championship.
