Jonny Bunyan has officially been appointed head coach of the Caledonia Gladiators men's team, a club he knows intimately both as a player and leader. The 33-year-old stepped in as interim coach in January following the departure of Robbie Peers, but after the team missed out on the play-offs, Bunyan is now focused on rebuilding and setting a higher standard.
His history with the Gladiators runs deep—he served as captain during their 2023 Super League Basketball Trophy triumph and made over 400 appearances for the club before a brief stint with Falkirk Fury earlier this year.
Expressing his pride in the new role, Bunyan described the club as a second home, citing personal and family ties that make the position especially meaningful. He acknowledged the team’s struggles last season but remains confident about the road ahead.
“The aim now is to get the club back to where it should be—fighting for championships and climbing to the top of the league, delivering strong performances for our fans,” he said.
Club chief executive Tony McDaid praised Bunyan’s leadership since stepping into the role earlier this year, highlighting his influence in the locker room and natural fit for long-term success. “Everyone at the club has been hugely impressed by Jonny,” McDaid noted. “He’s a fan favourite and we’re confident this decision will energize supporters ahead of the new season.”
With deep roots in the East Kilbride-based club and a clear vision for improvement, Bunyan now has the opportunity to reshape the team’s identity and bring them back into contention for domestic honours.
