Joel Embiid Considers Another Knee Surgery If Issues Persist

Posted : 10 February 2025

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid admitted on Sunday that he might require another surgery on his left knee if the discomfort persists by the end of the season. While Embiid did not confirm the need for surgery outright, he acknowledged that it remains a strong possibility depending on how his condition evolves.

Embiid, the 2022-23 MVP, was less definitive when speaking with reporters but suggested that addressing his ongoing knee issues may be unavoidable. He explained that when a problem remains inconsistent, it eventually requires a solution.

"We don't know what it is. We're looking into every option," Embiid stated, emphasizing that the team is still exploring possible treatments. His remarks indicate that surgery is not an immediate decision but could become necessary if the knee does not improve with time and management.

The All-Star center recently returned to action after missing 15 games due to knee trouble. Since his return, he has averaged 26.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 7.3 assists in three appearances. Last season, Embiid played just 39 games after suffering a torn meniscus in the same knee.

He underwent surgery in early February but returned in April to participate in the playoffs and later helped Team USA win gold at the Olympics. Reflecting on last year’s recovery, Embiid admitted he may not have had enough time to fully heal before resuming play.

Following Sunday’s game, Embiid expressed his belief that the upcoming offseason may be necessary for complete recovery. "At some point, I probably need these few months in the summer to just recover fully," he said. While he remains uncertain about the exact nature of the problem, he acknowledged that if the issue persists, alternative solutions must be considered. The 30-year-old has averaged 24.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in 15 games this season. He emphasized taking things "day by day," adding that if the pain worsens or remains inconsistent, addressing it will become imperative.
