Joe Tsai Calls Knicks’ Championship “Embarrassing” for the Nets

Posted : 19 August 2026

Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai has admitted that seeing the New York Knicks win the 2026 NBA championship was frustrating for his franchise, describing the situation as “embarrassing” while insisting it will not change Brooklyn’s rebuilding strategy.

The Knicks ended a 53-year wait for an NBA title this summer, sparking huge celebrations across New York. Their championship parade attracted more than two million people, highlighting the franchise’s strong connection with the city and its traditionally large fanbase.

For Tsai, however, the success of his crosstown rivals has been difficult to watch. He acknowledged that the Knicks’ triumph has irritated the Nets’ supporters but stressed that Brooklyn must remain focused on its own long-term plan rather than reacting to what happens across town.

Tsai said the Nets are committed to their rebuild and believes the organization is moving in a positive direction. He argued that the disappointment of watching another New York team lift the championship should not influence the decisions being made for Brooklyn’s future.

While Tsai sees the Knicks’ success as an embarrassment, Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment CFO Peter Stern views the championship differently. He believes the increased excitement surrounding basketball in New York could benefit the Nets by attracting people who had previously been less engaged with the sport.

Stern said the Knicks’ championship and their previous deep playoff runs helped activate “dormant” basketball fans throughout the city. The Nets hope to capitalize on that renewed interest as they continue developing their organization and building a stronger following in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn is coming off a difficult season in which the Nets finished 20-62, one of the NBA’s three-worst records, and missed the playoffs for a third consecutive year. The franchise is now relying heavily on young talent, including sixth overall pick Mikel Brown Jr., as it attempts to establish a new foundation.

The Knicks and Nets will meet four times during the 2026-27 regular season. Their first meeting is scheduled for November 2 at Madison Square Garden, with the return matchup in Brooklyn set for February 1.
