Jimmer Fredette, 36, officially announces his basketball retirement

Posted : 24 April 2025

Jimmer Fredette, once a celebrated college basketball sensation and later an international star, officially announced his retirement from professional basketball on Wednesday, April 23 (Thursday, April 24 in Manila). In a heartfelt post shared on X, Fredette expressed gratitude for the journey. “It’s time to say goodbye to basketball,” he wrote, reflecting on both the highs and lows of his career. He also thanked fans for their continued support and shared his excitement for the next chapter of his life with his family.

Hailing from Glens Falls, New York, Fredette rose to fame during his time at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he became the face of what fans dubbed “Jimmermania.” His senior year was particularly memorable, as he led the Cougars to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament and earned the prestigious title of National Player of the Year in 2011. His standout play captured the attention of basketball fans across the country.

During that remarkable final college season, Fredette topped all Division I players in scoring with an impressive average of 28.9 points per game. He also demonstrated his sharpshooting ability by connecting on nearly 40% of his shots from beyond the arc. In addition, he contributed 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game, showcasing his all-around skill set as a guard.

Although he entered the NBA with high expectations, Fredette struggled to find consistent footing in the league. Selected 10th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft, he played parts of six seasons with five different teams, including the Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans. He also had brief stints with the Chicago Bulls, Phoenix Suns, and New York Knicks, ultimately appearing in 241 NBA games.

Seeking a fresh start, Fredette found success overseas, especially in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). Over four seasons in China, he became a fan favorite and earned MVP honors in the 2016-17 season, where he averaged a staggering 37.3 points per game along with 7.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists. His scoring prowess was highlighted by two standout performances in which he scored 70 and 75 points, respectively.

In addition to his overseas accomplishments, Fredette later took a leadership role with USA Basketball’s 3×3 national team. Heading into the Paris Olympics, he was ranked the top 3×3 player in the world and was seen as a key piece in Team USA’s pursuit of a medal. Unfortunately, an adductor injury early in the tournament sidelined him, and with Olympic rules preventing roster replacements, the U.S. squad fell short of the podium.

Now stepping away from the court, Fredette closes a unique and eventful basketball journey that spanned college dominance, international stardom, and Olympic dreams. Though his path took unexpected turns, he leaves behind a legacy defined by relentless scoring, perseverance, and a lasting impact on fans around the globe.
