Jayson Tatum delivered his most dominant performance of the season to lead the Boston Celtics to a 114-99 road victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. The win officially secured a postseason spot for the Celtics, who improved their record to 50-24. Tatum finished with a season-high 32 points, adding eight assists and five rebounds in a clinical display at the Spectrum Center.
The Celtics entered the contest severely short-handed without key starters Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. Brown missed his second consecutive game due to left Achilles tendinitis; however, his absence allowed other players to shine. Payton Pritchard was exceptional in a starting role, contributing 28 points and six assists to support Tatum’s scoring outburst.
Boston established control early in the game by building a 19-point lead during the first half. They utilized a balanced attack and efficient perimeter shooting to keep Charlotte at a distance throughout the night. The Celtics shot over 50 percent from the field and hit 41.2 percent of their attempts from behind the arc.
Charlotte struggled to find rhythm as their long-range shooting faltered against a disciplined Boston defense. Despite being one of the league's top three-point shooting teams, the Hornets converted only 12 of their 43 attempts from deep. LaMelo Ball led the home side with 19 points; however, his efforts were not enough to spark a successful fourth-quarter comeback.
Hornets head coach Charles Lee praised Tatum’s performance after the game despite his team's defensive efforts to stop him. Lee noted that they tried to double-team the Celtics star several times to take the ball out of his hands. He credited Tatum for hitting difficult shots and acknowledged that Boston’s supporting cast made them pay during defensive scrambles.
Neemias Queta also provided a significant boost for the visitors by recording 17 points and eight rebounds. His interior presence helped the Celtics maintain their lead whenever the Hornets attempted to close the gap. This victory marks Boston's third consecutive win as they continue to chase the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
The result leaves Charlotte with a 39-36 record as they remain in the thick of the playoff race themselves. They currently sit in a competitive position but will need more consistency to secure their own postseason invitation. Boston now shifts its focus to a quick turnaround for a rematch against the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night.
