Jayson Tatum Embraces Celtics Leadership Role After Jaylen Brown Trade

Jayson Tatum is preparing to lead a new-look Boston Celtics team after the offseason trade that ended his nine-year partnership with Jaylen Brown. Brown, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers in a deal that brought Paul George to Boston along with draft assets.

Speaking at Boston's media day, Tatum reflected on his long relationship with Brown and the success they shared during their time together. The pair helped the Celtics reach the NBA Finals twice and win the franchise's 18th championship in the 2023-24 season.

Tatum acknowledged that the business side of the NBA eventually played a role in ending their partnership. Rather than focusing on the circumstances surrounding Brown's departure, he said he was grateful for their years together and the experiences that helped shape both players.

The departure puts greater attention on Tatum as he enters his 10th NBA season. The six-time All-Star is returning to a full season after an Achilles injury disrupted his 2025-26 campaign and forced him to miss Boston's Game 7 defeat by Philadelphia in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Tatum said he feels comfortable taking on a greater leadership responsibility. He emphasized awareness and understanding each player's role as important aspects of leading the revamped Celtics squad, rather than viewing leadership as something that belongs to one individual.

Boston coach Joe Mazzulla also played down the idea that the team should simply be viewed as the Celtics "without Brown." He said the focus should instead be on understanding the strengths of the current roster and finding ways to maximize the abilities of the players now available.

The Celtics have reshaped their roster following Brown's departure, with George joining Tatum alongside additions such as Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley Jr. The changes are designed to give Boston a different combination of experience, size and versatility heading into the new season.

Tatum also provided a positive update on his physical condition. After another offseason focused on rehabilitation and strengthening following Achilles surgery, he said he feels significantly better than he did at the same stage last year and is eager to begin the new campaign.

George, meanwhile, made clear that he sees supporting Tatum as a major part of his role in Boston. The veteran forward said he is prepared to contribute in different ways while helping the Celtics' franchise player handle the increased responsibility that comes with the team's latest changes.
