Jayson Tatum Denies Feud With Jaylen Brown After Celtics Trade Drama

Posted : 24 October 2026

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has dismissed suggestions of a feud with former teammate Jaylen Brown, calling for direct communication to end growing speculation about their relationship following Brown’s trade to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Tatum addressed the issue after scoring 36 points, grabbing nine rebounds and recording seven assists in Boston’s 107-103 victory over the New York Knicks on Friday. Rather than focusing solely on his performance in the Celtics’ home opener, the forward spent much of his postgame media session responding to Brown’s recent social media reaction.

The controversy began after Tatum discussed Brown’s departure in a video published on his YouTube channel. Tatum said he had been just as surprised as the public when he learned that Boston had traded Brown to Philadelphia during the summer. Brown subsequently responded to a social media clip of the comments with a blue baseball-cap emoji, commonly associated with the slang term “cap,” meaning a false or misleading statement.

Tatum expressed frustration that the situation had shifted attention away from the achievements the pair shared during their time together in Boston. The two players helped the Celtics reach the NBA Finals in 2022 and 2024, winning the championship in 2024 after years of competing together at the highest level.

Brown joined Boston in 2016, with Tatum arriving the following year. During their nine seasons as teammates, both earned All-Star selections and All-NBA recognition, becoming central figures in the franchise’s success.

Tatum rejected comparisons between their relationship and the well-documented tensions between former Los Angeles Lakers teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. He insisted that there was no personal animosity between himself and Brown and argued that their accomplishments deserved more attention than online speculation.

The 28-year-old also said he had contacted Brown by phone and text on the day the trade was announced. While acknowledging that people process major changes differently, Tatum believes a private conversation would be more constructive than allowing disagreements to develop through social media.

He added that he continued to wish Brown well and would welcome an opportunity for them to discuss any misunderstandings directly. Tatum also expressed dissatisfaction with suggestions that their next meeting on the court should be treated like a personal showdown rather than a basketball game.

The former teammates’ relationship has attracted attention since Boston traded Brown to Philadelphia in July in a deal that brought Paul George to the Celtics. Speculation about their dynamic had already surfaced during earlier playoff disappointments, but their championship success had also demonstrated how effective they could be together.

Brown played a leading role for Boston last season while Tatum recovered from an Achilles injury. Tatum eventually returned for the closing stretch of the regular season and played in the Celtics’ first-round playoff series against Philadelphia, although he missed the decisive Game 7 because of knee stiffness.

The trade ended a partnership that had delivered years of success for Boston, but Tatum says he does not want the separation to become a prolonged public dispute. He believes an honest conversation could clear up misunderstandings and allow both players to move forward without further speculation.

The Celtics and 76ers are scheduled to meet again on November 10 in Philadelphia, when Tatum and Brown could face each other in a regular-season game for the first time since the trade. For Tatum, however, the priority is resolving the issue through communication rather than turning their next meeting into a spectacle.
