Jaylen Brown receives key to Boston as Celtics farewell draws thousands

Jaylen Brown received an emotional farewell from Boston on Sunday as thousands of fans gathered at the 741 Frequency Fest to celebrate his decade with the Celtics.

The event, held at Boston Common, was organised by Brown’s 741 Performance brand and featured music, community activities, giveaways and appearances from several artists. Brown also took time to meet supporters, sign memorabilia and reflect on his connection with the city before beginning his next chapter with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brown was honoured during the celebration when Boston Mayor Michelle Wu presented him with a street sign reading “Jaylen Brown Way.” The gesture recognised his impact on the city both through basketball and his community involvement.

The five-time NBA All-Star then received a key to the city from Massachusetts Representative Christopher Worrell, who recognised Brown for his contributions to Boston’s Black and brown communities. Brown appeared visibly surprised by the honour as the crowd celebrated the recognition.

The gathering also featured performances from Lil Jon, Lil Baby and A$AP Ferg, with Brown joining Ferg on stage to perform their collaboration. Fans also had the opportunity to see the Larry O’Brien Trophy, while Brown signed Celtics and 76ers jerseys, hats and other memorabilia.

Brown spent 10 seasons with Boston after being selected third overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. He became a central figure in the franchise’s success, helping the Celtics win the 2024 NBA championship and earning Finals MVP honours.

Addressing the crowd, Brown expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout his time in Boston. He reflected on the people who helped him grow both as a player and as a member of the community, telling fans that he loved the city.

Brown’s departure followed his blockbuster trade to Philadelphia, ending a decade-long association with the Celtics. He is set to make his first return to Boston as a 76ers player when Philadelphia visits the Celtics on January 21.
