James Harden has agreed to a new three-year, $97 million contract to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, securing his future with the team through the 2028-29 season. The agreement includes a player option for tal year and a trade kicker, according to his agents.
Harden, who turns 37 on August 26, opted out of his previous $42.3 million player option during the offseason to negotiate a longer-term arrangement. The decision ultimately allowed Cleveland to make additional roster moves before finalising his new contract.
The deal will also push Harden's career earnings beyond $500 million, placing him in an exclusive group alongside LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry. He becomes only the second player, after LeBron, to secure more than $90 million in guaranteed salary at age 37 or older.
Harden joined Cleveland from the Los Angeles Clippers at the February trade deadline in a deal that sent Darius Garland to Los Angeles. He quickly became an important part of the Cavaliers' backcourt alongside Donovan Mitchell, helping the team reach its first Eastern Conference finals since 2018.
During his 26 regular-season games with Cleveland, Harden averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from three-point range. He then contributed 19.2 points, 5.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game across 18 playoff appearances.
The new agreement comes after an active offseason for Cleveland. The Cavaliers recently acquired Peyton Watson from Denver in a five-team trade, sending Max Strus to the Clippers while also making additional moves designed to give the franchise greater financial flexibility.
Harden's return gives Cleveland an experienced playmaker alongside Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen as the Cavaliers attempt to build on their run to the Eastern Conference finals. The veteran guard will now enter his 18th NBA season and 20th year as a professional player.
