Jalen Williams delivered the performance of his career on the biggest stage yet, scoring 40 points to lift the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 120-109 win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. His stellar showing helped Oklahoma stave off a late surge from the Pacers, who had trimmed an 18-point second-quarter deficit to just two in the fourth.
With the win, the Thunder now lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 and sit just one victory away from capturing the NBA championship. Williams’ 40-point display marks his career high in a playoff game and was bolstered by another elite performance from league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 31 points and 10 assists.
Oklahoma’s offensive firepower proved too much for Indiana in the closing moments, with Williams and Gilgeous-Alexander combining to seal the outcome. “My team-mates instil a lot of confidence in me to go out and be me,” said Williams. “Coach Mark has really told me to just be myself, and that’s made a big difference.”
The Pacers had previously mounted a dramatic comeback in Game 1, overturning a 15-point gap to win, but were unable to replicate that success in Game 5.
Williams acknowledged the similarities between the two games, saying the team learned from their earlier loss. “Tonight was the exact same game as game one, to be honest,” he said. “Learning through these finals is what makes this team good, and we were able to do that.”
Indiana’s hopes now rest on Game 6, set for Thursday night in Indianapolis. Star guard Tyrese Haliburton struggled, scoring just four points in 34 minutes, with head coach Rick Carlisle later confirming Haliburton wasn’t fully fit.
Still, the Pacers' playmaker expressed his commitment to continue. “It’s the Finals, man,” Haliburton said. “If I can walk, then I want to play.” Indiana will need a resurgent performance to force a decisive Game 7 and keep their title dreams alive.
