Jalen Williams Set for Season Debut as Thunder Continue Historic Start

Posted : 28 November 2025

Oklahoma City Thunder All-NBA guard Jalen Williams will make his season debut on Friday night against the Phoenix Suns, coming off the injury report. Williams has been recovering from right wrist surgery in July, followed by a procedure on October 31 to remove a screw, after playing last season with a torn ligament during the NBA playoffs.

The Thunder are enjoying a historic start to the 2025–26 season, holding an 18-1 record and a remarkable point differential of plus-16.5 through 19 games — the best in NBA history. Oklahoma City becomes only the fifth team in league history to begin a season 18-1.

Last season, Williams emerged as one of the league’s top performers, averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. He was one of just two players, alongside Cleveland’s Evan Mobley, to earn both All-NBA and All-Defensive honors. Williams also led the league in points per direct isolation allowed and ranked in the top five for points per direct drive allowed, showcasing his defensive impact.

Williams was among only four players last season to reach 1,400 points, 300 rebounds, 300 assists, and 100 steals, joining Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and James Harden. The duo of Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams combined for 1,180 points in the 2025 playoffs, the fourth-most ever by a pair in a single postseason.

The Thunder plan to ease Williams back into action, drawing on experience from star big man Chet Holmgren’s gradual return last season following a three-month hip injury. In Williams’ absence, second-year guard Ajay Mitchell has stepped up, averaging 15.9 points, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 steals, while Isaiah Joe has contributed a career-high 13.2 points per game, shooting 40.2% from beyond the arc.

Having missed the first 19 games, Williams is ineligible for postseason awards this year, which also affects his eligibility for the $287 million super maximum contract kicker in his five-year, $239 million extension.
