Jalen Duren Agrees to Five-Year, $200m Extension with Detroit Pistons

Posted : 02 October 2026

Jalen Duren has agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year, $200 million contract extension with the Detroit Pistons, bringing an end to months of uncertainty over his future with the franchise. The agreement was confirmed by reports from ESPN and The Athletic.

The 22-year-old center entered the offseason as a restricted free agent and remained unsigned when Detroit opened training camp. Duren had missed media day and the first practices of camp while negotiations continued, but he ultimately accepted the Pistons' existing $200 million proposal shortly before the deadline to sign his $9.6 million qualifying offer.

The contract dispute had lasted for much of the summer. Detroit had previously made offers in the $170 million to $190 million range before putting the fully guaranteed $200 million deal on the table. Reports also indicated that a weight-related provision had been discussed during negotiations but was removed from the final proposal.

Duren's position was also influenced by the structure of his negotiations compared with the extension given to teammate Ausar Thompson. Thompson recently agreed to a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension with Detroit.

On the court, Duren is coming off the strongest regular season of his career. He averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 65% from the field over 70 games, helping Detroit finish with the Eastern Conference's best record at 60-22. He was selected to the All-Star team and earned a place on the All-NBA Third Team.

His production declined during the playoffs, however, as he averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds while the Pistons were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals after seven games.

Detroit had remained publicly committed to bringing Duren back throughout the negotiations. President of basketball operations Trajan Langdon and coach J.B. Bickerstaff both indicated that the center remained an important part of the team's plans.

Duren was selected 13th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft and has spent his entire four-year career with Detroit. He now returns to the Pistons with a long-term deal in place as the team prepares for the 2026-27 season.
