Jalen Brunson's 39 Points Push Knicks to Brink of Finals as Celtics Face Playoff Crisis

Posted : 13 May 2025

Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to a 121-113 victory over the Boston Celtics, scoring 39 points and putting the reigning NBA champions on the brink of playoff elimination. The Knicks staged a dramatic comeback after trailing by 14 points in the third quarter, taking a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. This win brings the Knicks within one game of reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000.

In addition to the defeat, the Celtics lost forward Jayson Tatum to a "lower body injury" after he scored 42 points. Tatum was carried off the court in the fourth quarter and later seen in a wheelchair being taken to the locker room.

Coach Joe Mazzulla expressed concern for Tatum's health and stated that the player would undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. Mazzulla also noted the Celtics’ need to adjust for Game 5, with both Tatum’s condition and the team's performance being priorities.

The Celtics had initially built a 14-point lead, led by Tatum and Payton Pritchard, but the Knicks seized control in the second half. After falling behind early in the third quarter, New York took the lead heading into the final period.

Brunson dominated the closing moments, including a key steal and dunk by OG Anunoby, which put the Knicks ahead 118-106. Brunson emphasized the team's resilience, noting their refusal to give up despite being in a tough spot. The Knicks now have a chance to clinch the series in Game 5 in Boston on Thursday.
