Hungary's U19 women's basketball team defeated Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress 77–51, ending their run at the ongoing FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Czechia.
The Nigerian girls struggled to keep up with their European counterparts, despite a promising start. The first quarter ended in a balanced 9–9 tie, but things quickly unraveled in the second quarter, where Nigeria lost 12–30.
Although the team showed resilience in the third quarter, narrowing the margin with a 15–16 scoreline, it wasn’t enough to mount significant pressure on the Hungarians. Hungary sealed the win with a 16–15 edge in the final quarter, comfortably maintaining their lead to secure the victory.
Hungary’s Kinga Jisepovits led all scorers with 19 points, while her teammate Eliza Farbas dominated the boards with 13 rebounds. For Nigeria, Tobenna Nweke led the offense with 12 points, and Francis Chukwu contributed with 9 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Junior D’Tigress made history as the first African team to win a match at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup and the first to reach the round of 16, marking a significant milestone for the country and the continent.
