The opening day of the 2025 NBBF Final Four delivered high-level drama and contrasting performances in Port Harcourt, as Rivers Hoopers battled to a gritty win over Gboko City Chiefs, while Lagos Legends put on a commanding display to assert their title ambitions.
Hoopers Dig Deep to Subdue Resilient Chiefs
Defending champions Rivers Hoopers were made to sweat for their first victory, narrowly defeating the Gboko City Chiefs 66–61 in a tense and physical contest that kept the Arena on edge.
Peter Olisemeka stood out with a hard-earned double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, adding two steals to anchor the KingsMen on both ends. Victor Sunday provided timely support with 10 crucial points, particularly in the closing stages, as the Hoopers held their nerve under pressure.
Despite the loss, Gboko City Chiefs refused to fade. Paul Dibal led their charge with an impressive 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Kareem Joseph and Victor Evans also reached double figures. Their spirited late rally, however, fell just short against the champions’ composure.
Lagos Legends Run Riot Against Nigeria Customs
While the Hoopers had to grind, Lagos Legends delivered the day’s most authoritative performance with a vibrant 95–75 dismantling of Nigeria Customs. Building on their impressive Super 8 form, the Legends dominated from start to finish with pace, precision, and depth.
Patrick Abah spearheaded the offense with 19 points, while captain Bright Akhuetie (15 points) and Lucky Subel (10 points) added balance to a smooth-scoring unit. Chingka Garba was exceptional, contributing 10 rebounds and six assists, underlining the squad’s all-round efficiency.
Nigeria Customs, despite being outclassed, showed pockets of resistance. Captain David Godwin registered 18 points and five rebounds, Oghenetega David added 17 points and eight boards, while Favour Aboje and Ibe Agu provided valuable sparks. But none of it was enough to keep pace with the blistering Legends.
