Historic Milestones Set as 2026 BAL Sahara Conference Tips Off in Rabat

The 2026 Sahara Conference officially commences on Thursday, April 24, in Rabat, Morocco. This edition of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) introduces several historic firsts that underscore the rapid growth of the competition. Half of the six competing teams are making their league debut this year. Club Africain of Tunisia, Côte d'Ivoire's JCA Kings, and Nigeria's Maktown Flyers are all entering the continental stage for the first time.

Coaching dynamics in the Sahara Conference have also seen a significant shift. Five out of the six head coaches are making their debut in the BAL during this window. Said El Bouzidi, leading Fath Union Sports de Rabat, remains the most experienced figure as he enters his fourth season. In a landmark moment for the league, Stephane Konate is transitioning roles. He is set to become the first former player to officially lead a team as a head coach.

Rosters this season feature unprecedented levels of professional pedigree and championship experience. Axel Toupane of ASC Ville de Dakar has made history as the first NBA champion to suit up for a BAL franchise. Toupane previously secured an NBA ring and a G League title with Toronto 905. Furthermore, FUS Rabat’s Abdelhakim Zouita remains a singular figure in African basketball. He is the only former FIBA Africa Champions Cup MVP from 2017 still active in professional play.

Team ambitions are centered on establishing rare dynasties within the league. Al Ahly enters the conference with the goal of becoming two-time league winners. They join Petro de Luanda as the only clubs this season with a chance to secure a second trophy. Individual legacies are also on the line during this campaign. Solo Diabaté has the opportunity to become the first player to ever win three BAL titles.

The Sahara Conference games in the Moroccan capital are expected to be highly competitive. The mix of veteran coaches and debutant franchises creates an unpredictable tactical environment. This season's results will heavily influence the seeding for the upcoming playoffs. Fans are watching closely to see if established giants or hungry newcomers will dominate the standings.
