Hawks Trade Buddy Hield and Ryan Nembhard to Hornets for Dorian Finney-Smith

The Atlanta Hawks have traded Buddy Hield, Ryan Nembhard and cash considerations to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith. Both teams officially announced the deal on Tuesday night.

Finney-Smith, 33, joins Atlanta after spending last season with the Houston Rockets. He appeared in 37 games and averaged 3.3 points and 2.5 rebounds, while his NBA career numbers stand at 8.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

The veteran forward has three years remaining on his contract, with a player option for the 2028-29 season. He had only recently arrived in Charlotte after the Hornets acquired him from Houston earlier in the offseason along with three second-round draft picks.

Hield, meanwhile, joined the Hawks as part of the trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors. The 33-year-old appeared in just seven games for Atlanta last season, averaging 5.1 points and shooting 41.2% from three-point range, after recording 8.0 points per game in 44 appearances with Golden State.

Hield played 51 games between the Warriors and Hawks last season and averaged 7.6 points overall. He is set to earn around $9.7 million this season and has a player option worth roughly $10.1 million for 2027-28.

Nembhard was acquired by Atlanta during the offseason in a three-team trade involving the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks. The undrafted guard averaged 6.6 points and 5.3 assists in 60 games for Dallas last season, and ESPN reports that Charlotte is expected to waive him as part of the transaction.

The move also provides Atlanta with a $2.1 million trade exception, while Charlotte is expected to generate a trade exception of approximately $4.5 million.
