Great Britain claimed silver in both the men’s and women’s events at the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Sarajevo.
Great Britain ended the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Sarajevo with silver medals in both the men’s and women’s competitions. The men’s team were chasing a record ninth European title but fell narrowly to Spain 72-69 in Saturday’s final.
Gregg Warburton led the scoring for GB with 18 points, but the team struggled to overcome a spirited Spanish side eager for their first European crown. The British squad trailed by 12 points after the opening quarter but gradually closed the gap, briefly taking the lead with just over seven minutes remaining. Spain, however, regained control in the final minute, holding on to secure victory, while GB’s Kyle Marsh missed a buzzer-beating three-pointer that could have forced overtime.
The women’s team faced heartbreak a day earlier, losing 66-59 to the Netherlands in their European final. The Dutch side, who claimed their fifth consecutive European title and retained their Paralympic crown in Paris last year, proved too strong for GB. Lucy Robinson top-scored with 22 points, while Robyn Love contributed 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds.
Despite the final defeats, both British squads achieved a major milestone by reaching the championship deciders, thereby securing qualification for the 2026 World Championships in Ottawa, Canada. The strong performances underline Great Britain’s continued presence among Europe’s elite in wheelchair basketball.
