Giannis Antetokounmpo Reportedly Set to Leave Milwaukee Amid Trade Talks

Posted : 29 January 2026

Giannis Antetokounmpo appears closer than ever to leaving the Milwaukee Bucks, according to reports from US media. ESPN revealed that the team has started seriously entertaining trade offers for the 31-year-old superstar ahead of the February 5 trade deadline.

Several teams have already presented significant proposals, and Milwaukee is open to parting ways immediately. If a deal does not materialize before the deadline, sources indicate that Giannis is expected to depart during the offseason. The Bucks have reportedly set a high asking price, seeking either top-tier young talent or a valuable draft pick in exchange for the Greek forward.

Antetokounmpo had reportedly informed the Bucks’ management months ago that he felt it was time to move on after more than 12 seasons with the franchise. Milwaukee, currently 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 27-18 record, has recognized that retaining him through the season may no longer be feasible.

As of October 1, Giannis is eligible for a four-year Supermax contract worth $275 million, and he could become a free agent in the summer of 2027 if he opts out of his $62.8 million player option. The possibility that this season may be his final year in Milwaukee has increased the urgency for trade discussions.

The Greek star recently commented on his uncertainty, saying, “I don't know. I check the situation every day.” He also expressed frustration following a loss to Oklahoma City, criticizing his teammates for a lack of effort and teamwork.

This season was intended to be another championship run for Milwaukee, who reinforced the roster over the summer with players like Myles Turner to satisfy Giannis’ demands. While he initially considered offers from other teams, including the New York Knicks, he opted to stay. The Knicks remain his preferred destination, but other contenders, including the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors, are reportedly preparing competitive offers.

Giannis’ current season has also been affected by a hamstring strain, which could sideline him for several weeks. He has admitted to playing through injuries due to the team’s struggles in the standings. Despite these challenges, he continues to post impressive numbers, averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, with a historic field goal percentage of 64.5%. Twice named league MVP, he led Milwaukee to the NBA championship in 2021 and remains one of the most dominant players in the league.
