Providence College rising basketball star Oswin Erhunmwunse recently returned to his former secondary school, University Preparatory Secondary School in Benin City, Edo State, where he shared insights into the foundations that have underpinned his early success on the international stage.
The 6-foot-9, 220-pound center highlighted a trio of principles—relentless effort, faith, and mentorship—as key drivers behind his progress from a local student in Benin to a standout performer with the Providence Friars.
“At every stage, back in Nigeria and here in the US, it’s been about staying disciplined, staying close to God through prayer, and being open to advice from those who’ve walked the path before me,” Erhunmwunse told assembled students and faculty.
His breakout performance this season earned him BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honors, with impressive stats including leading the team in field-goal percentage (71.9%), rebounds, and blocks. Coaches and commentators have praised his natural talent, but even they acknowledge it’s his work ethic and grounding that fuelled that success.
“Oswin is an elite talent… dominant on defense and has an infectious personality,” Friars coach Kim English said when he committed to Providence last year .
During his visit, Erhunmwunse encouraged students to combine dedication, faith, and strong support systems to achieve their dreams.
As he heads back to the court and prepares for what promises to be a pivotal sophomore season, Erhunmwunse’s message resonates: success is built on consistent hard work, unwavering prayer, and wise mentorship.
